Aichi-Heinkel Type 98 ("Bess")

This aircraft is a prime example of the confusion over types of Japanese aircraft when the war began. Although it was thought that Aichi produced radial engined versions of the German Heinkel HE-111K bombers for the J.A.A.F. under license, the type in fact never existed. In spite of this one 1942 military recognition manual still stated  "a very few He.111s have been met in action.".  Before the aircraft was found out to be fictional it was assigned the Allied codename "Bess".
