Kawanishi J3K1/J6K1 Jinpu

In 1942 Kawanishi undertook the design of a single-seat interceptor fighter meeting the requirements of a 17-Shi specification. This aircraft, designated J3K1, was to have been powered by a Mitsubishi MK9A radial engine, but its development was suspended during the early design phase. Within a year work began anew on a Homare 42 powered derivative which received the short designation J6K1 and the popular name Jinpu (Squall). In spite of its promise the J6K1 was not proceeded with as the N1K2-J proved highly successful in meeting the Navy's requirement for a land-based interceptor. (source: Francillion)
